| The Wine Shop |
| Before I bought the Inn of the Beachcomber I was in the process
of opening a wine shop in Redmond, Oregon. Being fairly new
to the wine world my concept was to offer a large selection
of wines that had been rated by the wine press. I developed
an arbitrary price to rating scale and went about accumulating
inventory for the shop. The result is almost all the wine had
been rated by the critics and was priced pretty well. We have
a great selection of Oregon Pinot Noirs and reds from Washington
State as well as a good number of French and Spanish wines.
For those that like the bolder fruit forward new world wines
we have a good selection of Australian wines. My plan is to
accumulate special wines each year and lay them down so guest
can enjoy a great bottle of wine at the beach. All my wines
are out of distribution and we are probably the only place where
you can find them at normal markups. We only sell a bottle at
a time and if your plan it right we’ll still have the
wine you loved when you come back. That’s the idea; I
want to create a place that’s special enough to come back
to. Once I get rolling you can expect the southern Oregon wines
to become our specialty. My college roommate who could qualify as a wine geek,
exepct for the fact that he is way to cool, thought I was crazy
to buy the wine without tasting. I figure who am I to argue
with Robert Parker. When he brought his son out to check out
some colleges and we turned it into a tasting. I sent him off
with some of my Pinot Noir’s from Oregon’s 2003
vintage. The word back is that the first bottle was so good
he’s waiting for the right moment to try the next. Ya
am sure he thinks I’m nuts. At least the wines are good.
Having graduated from Willamette
University in Salem I gotta tell you I’m biased towards
