| Before Roycroft and Stickley. Before the term
"mission-style" increased the price of anything with
slats, there was the English Arts and Crafts movement, there
was William Morris. William Morris was born on March 24, 1834
to a well-to-do family. He was an English craftsman, poet, and
early socialist, whose designs generated the Arts and Crafts
Movement in the later half of the1900th century. William Morris
is best known for his wallpapers and textiles. In the 1860s
Morris revolutionized the art of house decoration and furniture
in England after founding the firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner
& Co. The Firm's early commercial success was largely based
on simple furniture, such as the so-called "Morris Chair,”
an adjustable-back armchair designed about 1866. This chair
was widely copied, notably by Gustav Stickley at his Craftsman’s
Workshops in Grand Rapids; U.S.A Morris defined art as "the
expression by man of his pleasure in labor". In the Middle
Ages art, according to him, artists were plain workmen. The
things which are today's museum pieces, where common things
earlier. Art should become this again Morris thought. In 1877
Morris, to whom the environmentalists and preservationists of
today owe an enormous debt, founded The Society for the Protection
of Ancient Buildings, and gave his first public lecture, on
"The Decorative Arts." |
